Movember in Zürich: Which Moustache Suits Your Face (and How to Style It)

Choose a moustache by the growth you actually have, the shape you enjoy and the time you want to spend maintaining it. Face proportions help, but density and growth direction determine whether a narrow pencil, fuller chevron or shaped tips are practical.

Start with width, length and density

Let the moustache grow enough to see the outline before repeatedly correcting small differences. Compare both sides with your face relaxed. Chevron

A fuller shape above the upper lip needs enough central growth. Keep the bottom edge comfortable around the lip and reduce bulky areas gradually. Do not assume a longer centre will cover every sparse corner.

Pencil

A narrow line needs careful trimming and reasonably even growth. Start wider than the final line so you have room to adjust. Removing too much from one side can make symmetry harder to recover.

Handlebar

Longer ends are directed outward or curled. They need sufficient length and regular combing. Use a small amount of a product specifically labelled for moustaches if you want shaped tips; scalp styling wax is not automatically suitable for facial use.

English moustache

Longer, comparatively straight ends create width. Check whether the centre and corners have enough density before aiming for a very extended outline. Comb into position before taking off stray length.

Lampshade

A fuller central shape with a defined lower edge can work without elaborate curled ends. Keep the lip area comfortable and decide how angular the corners should be. The name is less useful than a clear reference picture.

Horseshoe

The shape continues downward beside the mouth. It needs growth in those areas and deliberate separation from the rest of the beard. Discuss the lower outline before trimming the vertical sections.

What to maintain at home

Use a small comb and appropriate trimming tools. Comb dry hair into its usual position before cutting only what you intend to remove. Conditioner or shaping product is optional and should suit the particular format; more product cannot create density.

Sensitive skin and appointment choice

Tell the barber about sensitivity and known reactions before any shaving. A hot towel or closer shave is not automatically calmer for your skin.
