A low taper with a short boxed beard is a useful starting point if you want a tidy shape without much styling. A textured crop with stubble keeps the whole look lighter. For fuller facial hair, try a fade with a tapered beard, keeping the sides of the beard controlled and more length at the chin. The best haircut with a beard depends on how your hair falls, where your beard grows and how much upkeep you want.

Look at the haircut and beard as one shape. If both spread out at the sides, the face can look wider. If you add height on top and length at the chin, it can look longer. The sideburns are where the two meet: decide whether you want that join blended or clearly separated before either is cut.

Two looks from our Instagram: a fade with a short boxed beard, and a classic cut with a full grey beard.

Which haircut and beard combination should you choose?

CombinationChoose it forWatch out for
Low taper + short boxed beardA neat outline and a softer grow-outToo much width at the cheeks
Fade + full beardClear contrast and a fuller lower faceTaking the beard fade into sparse cheeks
Textured crop + stubbleA short routine and some forehead coverageA fringe cut shorter than you wanted
Buzz cut + short beardAlmost no hair stylingAssuming the shortest guard is always best
Side part + short beardA classic shape you can comb into placeAn unnecessarily shaved parting
Curly fade + tapered beardVisible curl with a cleaner outlineLosing the dry curl length at the front
Longer hair + stubbleMovement without a heavy beardHair and beard both spreading at the sides
Side part + moustache and stubbleA stronger moustache with lighter cheeksCopying a moustache your growth cannot support

These are starting points, not rules about who is allowed to wear what. If you want to work out your proportions first, use our haircut and beard guide by face shape. This page is about choosing the two together.

The first thing I look at is where the haircut meets the beard. You can keep the top loose and the beard quite sharp, but that bit around the sideburn has to make sense. I always ask how the client wears both at home before deciding what to take off.

Eight haircut and beard combinations to take to your barber

1. Low taper with a short boxed beard

A low taper tidies the sideburns and neckline while keeping some hair around the sides. A short boxed beard keeps a full beard outline but removes the extra bulk. Together, they give a neat finish without the bare sides of a skin fade.

This is worth trying with straight or wavy hair if you like a natural top. On a rounder face, keep the cheeks closer and a little more length under the chin. On a longer face, avoid adding both a tall top and a pointed beard.

Ask for: “Keep the taper low and leave some weight at the temples. Shape the beard close at the cheeks, and show me how much length you would keep at the chin before cutting it.”

Upkeep: comb the beard into its usual position before tidying stray hairs. A soft taper is more forgiving as it grows than a sharply exposed skin fade.

2. Fade with a full beard

Short sides give a fuller beard more prominence. A low or mid fade leaves more room to connect the hair and beard than a high fade, although the right height depends on your head shape and preferred contrast. A full beard can stay substantial without being equally wide everywhere.

The sideburn is the detail to discuss. You can blend down into the beard, or keep a deliberate separation. If your upper cheeks grow sparsely, taking the beard fade too low can remove the hair that makes the sides look connected.

Ask for: “I want a fade with a full beard. Keep the cheek growth that gives the beard its shape, reduce the width at the sides and blend the sideburn without shortening the chin.”

Upkeep: this is one of the more demanding combinations if you want it to look freshly cut. Read our fade guide before deciding on the height and finish.

3. Textured crop with stubble

A crop puts the hair forward rather than asking it to stand high. Stubble keeps the lower face visible, which suits someone who finds a full beard too heavy. The fringe can be soft and broken up; it does not have to be a straight, hard line.

This can work with a higher hairline when there is enough hair at the front to form a fringe. It is not a way to cover every kind of thinning. Fine hair also needs restraint with texturising: removing too much can leave the front looking thinner.

Ask for: “A short textured crop with a fringe that follows my hairline, plus even stubble. Check the fringe dry before making it shorter.”

Upkeep: try a small amount of Uppercut Matte Pomade for medium hold without shine. Trim stubble to the length you actually like, rather than chasing a particular number of days' growth.

4. Buzz cut with a short beard

A buzz cut removes most of the morning hair routine. A short beard leaves room to shape the jaw and chin. It is a practical pairing if you prefer clippers to styling products, or if you are ready to stop arranging longer hair over thinning areas.

Shorter is not automatically better. A slightly longer guard can feel less exposed, and your barber can check how the colour and density read against your beard. A buzz cut will also show the shape of your head more clearly.

Ask for: “Let's start with a longer guard before going shorter. Keep the beard compact and soften the join at the sideburns.”

Upkeep: there is little styling, but the cut still needs refreshing if you want to keep the same length. A buzz cut with faded sides is a different appointment from one grade all over.

5. Side part with a short beard

A side part follows a direction your hair can settle into. A short beard keeps the outline tidy without turning the lower half of the face into the main feature. It works particularly well when you like a combed finish and are happy to spend a few minutes styling.

Ask your barber to find the parting before committing to it. A natural part is easier to change later. A shaved hard part needs more maintenance and is difficult to hide while it grows out.

Ask for: “Follow my natural part and keep the top easy to comb. Leave the beard short, with a cheek line that follows the growth instead of cutting a new line far below it.”

Upkeep: a matte pomade gives a drier finish; a shinier product makes the combed shape more obvious. Our pomade, clay, paste and cream guide explains the difference.

6. Curly fade with a tapered beard

Keep enough length for the curl to form, then reduce the sides of the beard so the shape does not become wide above and below the ears. A tapered beard is shorter at the sideburns and cheeks, with more length left where the lower beard needs it.

A real example from the shop. The curl stays visible on top while the beard is lighter through the cheek and fuller around the chin.

The haircut and beard do not need the same texture. Curls can look loose while the beard has clean contours. What matters is leaving enough dry length in the hair and not carving away the beard's natural cheek coverage.

Ask for: “Leave enough length for the curls when dry, keep the fade below the main curl shape and taper the beard without making the chin pointed.”

Upkeep: STMNT Curl Cream is an option for defining waves, curls and coils. Start with a small amount on damp hair. There is more on dry length and shrinkage in our curly haircut guide.

7. Longer hair with stubble

Longer waves or a scissor cut can carry most of the movement while stubble keeps the face open. This pairing is useful when you want to keep growing your hair but do not want a full beard to look after as well.

The important bit is the hair around the ears. If it already spreads there, a wide beard adds more width in the same place. Keeping facial hair compact gives you a simpler shape. Longer hair with a full beard is also an option, but both outlines need attention.

Ask for: “Keep the length and the way my hair falls. Take out weight only where it is building up, and keep the facial hair to neat stubble.”

Upkeep: tell your barber if you air-dry your hair, tie it back or use a dryer. Our men's grow-out guide covers the awkward stages between lengths.

8. Side part with a moustache and stubble

If the moustache is your strongest growth, you do not need to grow a full cheek beard to make a combination work. A side part with a fuller moustache and short stubble gives the facial hair a clear focus while keeping the jaw lighter.

From our photo library: a side part, a moustache with curled ends and light stubble. The moustache is the main feature of the facial hair.

A handlebar finish needs enough length at the ends. If you prefer a quieter look, keep those ends natural and trim the lip line. Avoid trimming the moustache back to the same length as the stubble by habit.

Ask for: “Keep the natural side part and make the moustache the focus. Tidy the lip line, keep the length at the ends and leave the cheeks as short stubble.”

Upkeep: check the lip line and comb the moustache before trimming. If you want curled ends, ask your barber to show you how to set them.

How do you match hair and beard to your face?

For a rounder face, try closer sides and a little more length through the chin. You do not need both a very high quiff and a long pointed beard. Start with one small change and check it from the side.

For a longer face, keep the top lower and the beard relatively compact at the chin. Some weight at the temples or cheeks can make a less elongated outline.

For a square face, decide whether you want to emphasise the jaw or soften it. Short stubble shows the natural jaw; a rounded beard outline can soften the corners. An oval face usually gives you more room to experiment, but hair density and beard coverage still matter.

Patchy cheek growth is a reason to work with the moustache, chin or shorter stubble. It is not a reason to cut a cheek line so low that little beard remains. Show your barber the areas you want to keep.

Keep the join and the beard outline in shape

A neckline cut onto the jaw can make the beard look smaller from the front and leave it sitting above the chin from the side. Ask your barber to show you where your own neckline should sit, with your head in a normal position. There is no single finger-width rule that fits every neck.

If you want a skin fade to stay crisp, you may prefer a refresh around every two or three weeks. A softer taper or scissor cut can often go longer. The beard may need tidying sooner than the hair. These are starting intervals; your growth and how sharp you like the finish decide the timing.

Hair and beard products for these combinations

Choose the product for the job. You do not need to buy a complete routine to wear a haircut and beard together.

For a crop or combed side part: Uppercut Matte Pomade 100g offers medium hold and a matte finish. For a curly top: STMNT Curl Cream 150ml helps define the natural curl. Use less first; you can add more once you see how your hair dries.

For a fuller beard: Proraso Beard Oil Wood & Spice 30ml helps soften the beard hair. For cleaning: Proraso Beard Wash Wood & Spice 200ml is a beard cleanser. Oil does not replace washing or provide the hold of moustache wax. Our beard oil, balm and wash guide explains what each does.

FAQ

What is the best haircut with a beard?
A low taper with a short boxed beard is a useful starting point for a neat, adaptable look. A textured crop with stubble keeps things lighter, while a fade with a tapered full beard gives more contrast. Choose according to your hair texture, beard coverage and routine.

Does a fade look good with a beard?
Yes. A fade can work with stubble, a short beard or a full beard. Decide how the sideburn should connect and how much cheek growth you need to keep. A low or mid fade usually leaves more room for that transition.

Should my hair and beard be the same length?
No. A short haircut can work with a longer beard, and longer hair can work with stubble. The lengths do not have to match. Check the width at the temples and cheeks, and the total height from the top of the hair to the bottom of the beard.

Which haircut and beard combination is easiest to maintain?
A buzz cut with stubble or a short beard needs little hair styling. A textured crop with stubble is another practical option. Both still need trimming to keep their shape; a soft taper is often more forgiving between appointments than a skin fade.

What works if my beard is patchy?
Try shorter stubble, a moustache with stubble, or a beard shape that uses the stronger growth at your chin. Choose the haircut you like, then adapt the facial hair to its real coverage. Extra length does not reliably fill sparse cheeks.

Can I book a haircut and beard trim in one appointment in Zürich?
Yes. Add a haircut and The Good Beard Trim in one Fresha booking at The Good Barbers Enge or Europaallee. The listed Classic Haircut and Beard Trim total CHF 108 and 75 minutes of service time. Check your confirmation for the final appointment details.
